I got carried away this month and read like 3 books in a week. Let’s get into what I read in February.
While We Were Dating by Jasmine Guillory ⭐⭐⭐
I am officially done with The Wedding Date series by Jasmine Guillory!! I would still say that my least favourite book from this series is Royal Holiday. It was so bad that it was my least favourite book of 2021.
I read the last book of the series this month and thought it was okay. Anna Gardiner, an actress, meets Ben Stephens during an ad campaign. I would say that Ben is definitely the best man in this universe when it comes to flirting. Unpopular opinion but I don’t like how the characters abruptly discuss ‘political topics.’
I would recommend reading the books in order even though it does not matter to understand how the characters are connected with each other.
Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hilbert ⭐⭐⭐
I need a new romance series so I started the Brown sister series. I played myself by trying audiobooks and finished the audiobook only to reread the book because I don’t know what happened. I guess I was daydreaming. My brain is yet to adapt to audiobooks. This gets really steamy towards the end but is also hilarious. It’s an enemy to lovers trope. Purple glittery what??!
My Body by Emily Ratajkowski ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Emily is a famous model who writes about her journey with her body in the modelling industry. I really liked the writing and the topics she covered. I also love the shade Emily gave about a certain famous model who married a tech billionaire. Does that not count as defamation? Go read the book to know who.
I wish she still understood the real picture though, her type of body is still a commodity that is valued in the modelling industry and she will never be a minority. Her features will always be profitable no matter what. I wish she acknowledged that.
I expected a better book cover though! The whole big text being the title and name lacks any creativity.
More Than Enough: Claiming Space For Who You Are (No Matter What They Say) by Elaine Welteroth ⭐⭐⭐
Former Teen Vogue Editor in Chief writes a memoir about her life climbing through the ranks in media and fashion. If you love the show, The Bold Type, you might enjoy this book but also notice so many similarities between the episodes and Elaine’s work at Teen Vogue. I felt like I was reading a real episode of The Bold Type sometimes.
Caucasia by Danzy Senna ⭐⭐⭐
Another historical fiction book I have read discussing racial passing. Two sisters, Birdie and Cole, born to a Black father and white mother but Birdie is white passing. The parents separate and each goes with one parent. Birdie spends her time worrying about her sister and trying to find and reconnect with her. I have been loving reading books with children’s POV but also felt that the timelines were too many and rushed because so much was happening in Birdie’s life.
Sulwe by Lupita ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I love children’s books because they are so cute. I read the English version of this book last year but I had to get the Swahili version. Textbook Center has the Dholuo version as well. I would recommend this book to parents for their kids as it talks about the importance of self acceptance and loving yourself at a young age.
Notes On Grief by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Short essay about how Chimamanda dealt with grief after losing her father. A very eye opening essay about how grief never really ends and never goes away! Such a lovely tribute to her father. I would recommend it.
See you all next month!
