I definitely got back into reading this year because of quarantine. Importantly, it was my first time reading electronic books nonstop on Libby. I used to read physical books but I started reading online because libraries were closed and I love it. I can highlight books, take screenshots of quotes I love and can see my reading progress. The only downside is I now have 100 screenshots.
Anyways, let’s get into it!!
Books I Loved ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Such A Fun Age by Kiley Reid
This was the first book I read from the Reese Book Club and I loved it so much. One of the best books I have ever read. It’s about Emira, a young Black babysitter, accused of kidnapping the white child she babysits. I absolutely love the commentary about race, class, status and privilege. I cannot wait for the screen adaptation. I love the TikToks by Caitlin Reilly and wish she plays Alix Chamberlain. She plays the rich white woman role so well. I loved this book so much that I read Uneasy Street: The Anxieties of Affluence by Rachel Sherman because it was referenced in the intro.
Uneasy Street: The Anxieties of Affluence by Rachel Sherman
As mentioned earlier, I read this book because it was referenced in Such A Fun Age by Kiley Reid. I read the book and saw Alix Chamberlain in all the women. Rachel interviews wealthy people in New York and their understanding of their wealth and how they acquired it. I really loved the housewives’ interviews, hearing their thoughts about privilege and their unwillingness to call themselves rich. They are simply ‘well off!’ 😅
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
I never read historical fiction but this book was so good that I devoured it within two days because I was hooked. Two Black identical twins, one opts to pass for white and lives as a white woman. The book explores the history of passing in America and the impact it has on families and the one who passes. Highly recommend it. This is better than The Mothers, Brit’s debut album.
The best part is that it has been picked up by HBO for a screen adaptation. I cannot wait!!! So excited to see the trans representation on tv. I also love the book cover! So beautiful and aesthetically pleasing.
Uncanny Valley: A Memoir by Anna Weiner
I tried to read more memoirs this year and so glad I did. Anna Weiner shares her experience working in Silicon Valley at the height of the tech industry and her experience as a woman. I love reading about the tech startup culture and how some of these men are truly deranged. During a job interview a manager forced an applicant to take the LSATs on the spot. That would be my 13th reason!
The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges Are Failing Disadvantaged Students by Anthony Abraham Jack
One of the best non-fiction books I have ever read! I love reading books and gaining a new perspective or learning something new. Anthony discusses the college experience for different low-income students at elite colleges. I love the commentary about the small things like office hours that only certain students know about because of their background.
I recommend anyone in education to read this book because you get to find ways in how to make your lessons or even campus culture more inclusive!
