Starting the year right by ensuring I read at least one book every week. So far so good but last week but I never had my ipad so I missed an entire week of reading. Honestly, it’s now part of my night routine to read before bed.
Let’s get into it!
Passing by Nella Larsen ⭐⭐⭐
I read this book because Brit Bennett, author of The Vanishing Half, mentioned that she read this while writing her novel. The Vanishing Half is my favourite historical novel so obviously I would read this. I also wanted to read it because the new edition includes an introduction by Brit. My edition was the old one so I never got to read Brit’s essay. Anyways, both stories talk about passing as two childhood friends reconnect and one learns that her friend has been passing as white woman. There is also a Netflix feature about it. I hope to watch it soon but it’s in black and white.
Party of Two by Jasmine G ⭐⭐⭐
I am now a romance girlie. I plan to read The Wedding Date series by Jasmine Guillory but the waitlist is so long. I have been reading them in no particular order but I thought this one was so sweet. Lawyer meets a senator at a bar and it’s the buildup of their relationship. Compared to the other books in the series, I felt like this couple was rather dull. Drew and Alexa are still my favourite. Also Carlos and Nikole!!
Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell ⭐⭐⭐
Trying to get into non-fiction this year!! Amanda Montell analyses why some people are more prone to joining cults. I have no interest in cults so maybe that’s why I thought some chapters were a little bit boring. I enjoyed the analysis regarding modern cults such as Glossier and SoulCycle because I have interacted with the brands. The religion chapters felt too long and rather repetitive. My least favourite Criminal Minds episode is the one about religious cults…so maybe that’s why this book was not a 5 star. Also how gorgeous is the book cover?
See you all next month!
